Micro Program - Ages 5 & Under (U4 & U5)

About the Micro Program

The micro program is an in-house program designed to promote growth at the individual level of the fundamental concepts and skills of soccer. This means that the program fosters involvement of all players and as much opportunity for as many "touches" or activity with/near the ball as possible. Intramural teams are constructed to make sure participants can play as much as possible and so team sizes are intentionally limited to facilitate as much playing time as possible and adequate breaks.

Games are played on Sundays with start times varying between Noon and 4 PM. Games are typically 40 minutes for this age groups. All games are "small sided" or played on age appropriate field sizes.

Age Groups

The program is comprised of co-ed teams of boys and girls born in 2017 & 2018 (U4/U5)

The season is 8 in-house games played on Sundays beginning on September 12, ranging in start times from 12:00 - 3:30PM. Practices/training sessions are typically held on Mondays and Fridays in the evenings, though depending on state mandates and limits related to outdoor activity size, the number or duration of training sessions may be reduced. Practice schedules by age group are communicated prior to the season start date. All games and practices will be held at Gloucester Township Community Park on Hickstown Rd.

Game Rules

At this age group, soccer is usually one of the few sports where participation and play is not "turn-based'. In other sports, there are distinct opportuinties for each participant to take their "turn" to accomplish the game objective, such as batting in baseball or possessing the ball in basketball. Soccer requires participants to "win" the ball as part of play and is inherently less structured into "turns". In-house programming at the micro level is designed to maximize the opportunity of participants to touch the ball as much as possible, gain comfort playing a sport which is not turn-based, and to be comfortable with the group acitivity. To promote these goals the game play is aligned with United States Youth Soccer recommendations for number of players and field size.
